The day Ottawa Senators fans circled on their calendar on July 5 has finally arrived. Daniel Alfredsson and the Detroit Red Wings (13-7-7) are in town tonight to take on the Senators (10-12-4.) This is Alfredssons first time playing in Ottawa since leaving the place he called home for 17 seasons as a free agent in the summer. You can catch all of the action live on TSN with coverage beginning at 5pm et/2pm pt. At age 40, Alfredsson returns in the midst of a fine first season in the Motor City. He has six goals and 13 assists in 22 games in on pace for a 66-point campaign. The team plans to play a video tribute to their former captain on the scoreboard prior the game. "Well recognize what Daniel has done in Ottawa and what he means to our fans," Senators owner Eugene Melnyk told Ottawa sports radio station TSN 1200 Wednesday. "Theres no question were going to honour him and make sure that everybody is behind him." Media attention has been strong this weekend and Alfredsson spoke on Saturday about his feelings surrounding the game. "Its a division rival and theyve handed it to us pretty good two times (this season)," said Alfredsson. "Obviously coming back to Ottawa, playing the first game, Im sure it will be emotional. Im not sure how I will react but I think it will be a special night." His return sparks memories of the turmoil surrounding his departure last summer. "We all were pretty adamant that he was going to return because he is grounded in this city and so well-loved that everyone figured something would work out," Senators defenceman Marc Methot told the Ottawa Sun upon the signing. Some of that love from Senators fans has since dissipated and Alfredsson can expect a mixed reception when he takes the ice at the Canadian Tire Centre. This wont be the first time that Alfredsson has done battle with his former mates, though. He was held without a point in Detroit when the teams met on Oct. 23, but was forced to sit out with a groin strain for their second meeting exactly one month later. Back in August, Alfredsson explained his motivation to depart Ottawa and play another season when he initially had planned to retire. "In late June this year, I decided I had it in me to play one more season," Alfredsson said on August 15. "I told management I was willing to return and I reminded them of our agreement from the year before." That agreement, according to Alfredsson, was that he would be compensated for taking less money in the final year of his previous deal in order to help Ottawas cap number come down. By agreeing to a salary of $1 million in the last year of that deal, his average salary dropped to $4.8 million from the $6.1 million where it would have been because of his decision to retire. When he decided to play another year, negotiations with the Senators, Alfredsson said, "went nowhere." The Red Wings came calling and Alfredsson was more than willing to listen. "I was delighted by their enthusiasm and by their belief in how they saw me fitting into their plans," he said of the Red Wings in August. "So that call opened my eyes to a possibility I had never thought of — to play another year, maybe even two, with another great team." The repercussions of that decision will be fully felt tonight. Jonas Gustavsson will likely get the start in net for the Red Wings. His counterpart in the Ottawa goal will be Robin Lehner. Malcolm Subban Jersey . One day after Barcelonas 4-3 win at Real Madrid featured three penalties, referees again dominated a wide-open game that saw Almeria ultimately move out of the relegation zone and one point ahead of Getafe which took its place.BARCELONA, Spain -- Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Sevilla on Wednesday in the aftermath of its stinging "clasico" defeat as it slipped behind in the Spanish title race, while Atletico Madrid and Barcelona kept winning to move ahead of their rival in the standings. Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid in charge with his league-leading 27th goal of the season in the 14th minute, but Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca scored twice, in the 19th and 73rd, to complete the comeback. Madrids loss at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium came four days after it squandered a chance to effectively end Barcelonas title defence, with Lionel Messi out-dueling Ronaldo by scoring a hat trick for a thrilling 4-3 win in the Spanish capital. These consecutive losses came after Carlo Ancelottis side had gone undefeated for 31 straight matches. "We have to keep working, fighting and ask our fans for forgiveness," said Madrid full back Marcelo. "Its tough to do what we did, to keep winning for so many games. We have lost two games. They arent more important, but they are critical. Now everything is much more difficult." Diego Costas second-half header gave Atletico a 1-0 victory at home over Granada as it moved three points clear of Madrid with eight rounds remaining. Lionel Messi and Neymar helped Barcelona stay one point behind Atletico as it rose into second place, but the 3-0 win over Celta Vigo came at the cost of goalkeeper Victor Valdes tearing a right knee ligament. "I am happy for the goals and for having won the other day at the Santiago Bernabeu," said Neymar. "(But) the victory is sad because of Valdes injury." Ronaldo struck first at Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium when his free kick took a deflection off the arm of Bacca, catching goalkeeper Antonio "Beto" Bastos out of position and helpless as he watched the ball float into his net. But Bacca equalized from Jose Antonio Reyes pass after Xabi Alonso had lost possession. Madrid then wasted several chances, and Sevilla tilted the match in its favour in the second half when Ivan Rakitic used a superb control of aa pass before playing Bacca clear to beat goalie Diego Lopez for the winner.dddddddddddd Sevilla extended its winning streak to six games in a row as it remained in fifth place. Atletico stayed unbeaten at home in league play this season after limiting Granadas attack with its stout defence before Diego Costa turned home Jose Sosas corner kick in the 63rd for his 24th league goal of the season. Earlier at Camp Nou, Valdes right knee buckled after a routine save in the 22nd, and he had to be shuttled off the pitch with his gloved hands covering his face. The club later said he will need surgery, which would rule him out for the season. Neymar netted twice from passes by Alexis Sanchez. The Brazil striker opened the scoring in the sixth minute and struck again in the 67th after Messi recorded his 22nd league goal of the season on the half-hour mark. Celta, coached by former Barcelona player and B-team manager Luis Enrique, never mounted a challenge and its high defensive line proved easy pickings for the Catalan sides passing game. Messi got things rolling when he dribbled at Celtas defence and spotted Alexiss run down the right edge of the area, where he received Messis pass and squared for Neymar to tap home. After Jose Pinto went on to replace the injured Valdes, Messi took Andres Iniestas pass, rounded keeper Yoel Rodriguez and fired the ball inside the upright for his eighth goal in his last four matches. Pain in his left leg kept Iniesta from returning after halftime, but he said he expected to be fit to play at Espanyol on Saturday. The 38-year-old Pinto was tested in the 52nd and was up to the challenge when he made back-to-back reflex saves to turn away Augusto Fernandezs powerful strike and Santi Minas follow-up attempt. He went on to make two more noteworthy saves. Neymar hit a second time from a long pass by Alexis when he managed to slot the ball through two defenders and beyond Rodriguez. Also, Rayo Vallecano beat Osasuna 1-0 thanks to Joaquin Lavirreys 90th-minute penalty for its fourth win in five rounds to edge away from the relegation zone.
